Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with that expensive

double-pane energy efficient kind, and today, I got a call from the
contractor who installed them. He was complaining that the work had
been completed a whole year ago and I still hadn’t paid for them.

Hellloooo,…………just because I’m blonde doesn’t mean that I am
automatically stupid. So, I told him just what his fast talking sales
guy had told me last year, that in ONE YEAR these windows would
pay for themselves! Helllooooo? It’s been a year! I told him.
There was only silence at the other end of the line, so
I finally just hung up. He never called back. I bet he felt like an idiot.

Obviously this is a joke but an all too common sales pitch by replacement window companies to sell you on the energy savings of their windows to justify the expensive price!  A few things to keep in mind when shopping for new windows:

1. Their savings claims are based on lab tests and averages.  No one can say with any certainty how their windows will perform in your specific house.

2. They’re usually talking about the glass, not the window as a whole.  You can upgrade your glass for far less than a whole new window and wood is a far better insulator than plastic.

3. Great!  Save $100 bucks a year with your new windows.  You probably spent $20,000 more than you needed to.  At a $100 bucks a year…you do the math!

This is very typical of what we see from most wood double hung units 10-15 years old.  Rarely do we see double hung sashes go bad because of the recessed design.  The added advantage of a protected sash design combined with our trademarked Rot-Free frame conversion offers the homeowner years of additional life without costly replacement.

It’s always tough when we are the second guy to work on windows.  Several of the windows on this home were altered previously by another contractor that clearly did not have the necessary knowledge and experience to perform this work.  The result is the pictures below.  To be specific, the frame parts don’t match and the carpentry is very poor.  The biggest tragedy is the sashes.  The replacement sashes are merely single pane plexi-glass sandwiched between common pine boards face screwed into the frame rendering them useless.  The icing on the cake is the homeowner waited three weeks for this with the window boarded up!  Several other units had some minor and still incomplete work done to them.  Despite the homeowner not wanting this unit redone properly, we were able to save several other units and maintain the beauty and integrity of their Lincoln windows.

Complete restoration means just that.  A Window Makeover is designed to restore the entire exterior side of the window frame all at once.  From an installation stand point, this makes sense because window construction is based on multiple components building upon each other.  Outer pieces have to be removed to access parts behind them.  From a value stand point, pay for it once and be done with it.  It may make perfect sense at the time to only replace the piece that’s bad, but you constantly have to revisit that same window over and over again and in time, spend more money than if it got restored all at once.  Below is a prime example that we recently came across.  Yes, I’m sure only replacing the nosing of this window made sense at the time.  But as you can see, the sill has gone bad behind the new nosing that was installed less than two years ago by a contractor that doesn’t offer a complete process or lacks the experience to know the ill fate of a bare minimum repair.
